Garmisch-Partenkirchen – The death of Rosi Mittermaier deeply moved many people in Germany.

The ski legend passed away on Wednesday January 4th at the age of 72.

She was seriously ill, the family said.

Son Felix Neureuther commented live on the first run of the Garmisch night slalom in the afternoon.

In the second round he was no longer heard - one can only guess what was said to him in these difficult moments.

Bernd Schmelzer is someone who knows Neureuther very well.

The TV reporter usually sits at Felix's side when ARD is commenting on ski events.

Schmelzer will also have his say in a BR special on Thursday afternoon from 1.30 p.m.

It is of course about the eventful life of Rosi Mittermaier.

Here you can follow the program (see above) live.

Rosi Mittermaier: Two gold and one silver at the Olympics

About Rosi Mittermaier: She leaves behind her husband Christian Neureuther (73), also a former ski racer, their children Ameli (41) and Felix Neureuther (38) and their grandchildren.

Son Felix won several World Championship medals as a slalom specialist and ended his active career almost four years ago.

Daughter Ameli works as a fashion designer.

Mittermaier made her international debut in the 1966/1967 season, her most successful winter was to follow almost ten years later.

At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, she won gold in the downhill and slalom, as well as silver in the giant slalom.

Markus Wasmeier on Rosi Mittermaier: "You won't find a person like that again"

At the time, these successes also counted as World Cup medals, and the Alpine World Ski Championships were integrated into the Winter Games.

Here Mittermaier also won the title in the non-Olympic combination.

She also won the overall World Cup this winter, and Mittermaier retired at the end of the season at the age of 25.

"We have lost a fantastic person.

Rosi had a heart as big as a bus, she was always there for everyone - that was unique," said Markus Wasmeier, double Olympic champion from 1994 and family friend, the SID: "You won't find a person like that again, she leaves behind a huge gap."
