Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Germany's former world-class ski racer Rosi Mittermaier died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the age of 72.

The family of the two-time Olympic champion confirmed this to SID on Thursday.

Mittermaier fell asleep peacefully with the family on Wednesday after a serious illness.

Mittermaier leaves her husband Christian Neureuther (73), also a former ski racer, and their children Ameli (41) and Felix Neureuther (38).

Her son Felix was also a ski racer and won several world championship medals.

On the day of her death, he even commented on the night slalom in Garmisch as an expert on ARD.

Markus Wasmeier, double Olympic champion from 1994 and family friend, told SID: “We have lost a fantastic person.

You won't find someone like that again, she leaves a huge gap."

The Bavarian state parliament also recognized the deceased skiing icon Rosi Mittermaier as an exceptional personality.

“Rosi Mittermaier was an exceptional ski racer.
