The 49-year-old Karanka is considered one of the closest people to Jose Mourinho in the world of football and served as his assistant at Real Madrid.
Since leaving the Blancos in 2013, he managed to serve as the head coach at Middlesbrough for four years and also stood on the lines of Nottingham Forest, Birmingham City and Granada.
He had the greatest success in Boro, when he marched it to qualify for the Premier League in the 2015/16 season.
For Granada, his last team, Karanka reached six rounds to the end of the previous season to keep it in La Liga, but despite two wins and two draws he could not prevent the relegation.
He remained in the team in the second division as well, but was fired about two months ago.
As a player, the Basque started his career at Athletic Bilbao where he played in the years 1992-1997 and then wore the Real Madrid uniform for five years that included winning one championship and three Champions League trophies.
He then returned for four years at Bilbao and retired in 2006 after playing one season with the Colorado Rapids of the MLS.
He made one appearance in the Spain national team.
The Spanish coach arrives at Maccabi Tel Aviv ranked second in the Premier League, six points below the leading Maccabi Haifa.
The Yellows also qualified yesterday for the quarter-finals of the State Cup, where Maccabi Petah Tikva from the National League awaits them.
