Derby time in the Bavarian ice hockey league: On Epiphany, the “Mammuts” from Schongau meet the “Miners” from Peißenberg.

It's also a top game.

Schongau – The schedule of the Bavarian League brought EA Schongau a few days off.

In contrast to the competition, the "mammoths" were not in action the day before New Year's Eve.

This means that the EAS can go into the derby on Epiphany (Friday, 8 p.m.) in its own hall against the “Miners” of TSV Peißenberg.

"It's a special game for me, after all it's against my home club," says EAS coach Markus Ratberger.

The 42-year-old has only recently been the head coach behind the “Mammuts” gang.

From 2019 to 2021 he trained the youngsters in Peißenberg before taking over the 1b team in Schongau.

During his playing days, Ratberger was primarily deployed for the Peißenberger “Eishackler” in the Bavarian League.

"I think it will be an interesting and close game at eye level," says Ratberger.

A look at the table supports this thesis, because both teams are right next to each other in fourth and fifth place.

Mammoths meet Miners in the Derby on Epiphany

EAS has increased its lead over the county chaser midweek without stepping onto the ice itself.

The Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV) awarded the Schongauers the points from the game in Erding, which was canceled due to a puck throw.

"We would have liked to finish the game and we would have been ready for a replay too.

But in the end, of course, we accept the decision of the BEV,” explains Ratberger.

After the positive information, his focus was immediately on the derby, in which his team could already secure participation in the championship round with a win in regular time.

The "Miners", who recently had some problems away from home, have also decided to win.

Due to four defeats in a row on foreign ice, the team around the coaching team Sepp Staltmayr and Stefan Ihsen lost contact with the top group.

In fifth place, however, the Peissenbergers are absolutely on target.

The “Miners” won the first leg on the Ammer 4:1.

EA Schongau lost in the first leg and now wants revenge

"It will definitely be a hot duel," said Staltmayr, expecting a fully motivated opponent who wants to make up for the defeat in the first leg.

“We know the opponent very well.

Schongau has built a good and compact team over the years,” says Staltmayr.

He has great respect for the "Mammuts", where four former Peissenbergers now play: Tobias Estermaier, Matthias Müller, Florin Höfler and Leo Zink.

The quartet is also ready for use.

Only the two long-term injured Fritz Weinfurtner and Samy Paré are missing from the Schongau team.

Ryan Murphy, who was signed by EAS as Paré's replacement, was recently struggling with a cold.

"But he'll be fit again by Friday," promises Ratberger.

Niko Fissekis is still missing from the “Miners”.

The use of the battered defenders Dominik Ebentheuer and Manuel Singer is questionable.

By the way: everything from the region is also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.

And in our Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

After Fissekis will probably be out for a longer period of time, the Peissenbergers are happy that Sinan Ondörtoglu is getting better and better after his long injury break.

"I think his goal against Erding made it click for him.

Now we have some leeway when it comes to putting together the line-up,” says Staltmayr, who, however, still leaves it open which side Ondörtoglu will line up with in Schongau.

What is certain, however, is that a full stadium can be expected on Lechuferstraße on Friday evening.

"The team deserved it because of the good performances," said Ratberger, looking forward to a large crowd.

Staltmayr is also looking forward to an atmospheric derby: "I hope that many Peißenberg fans will support us again, as they did at the away games."
