Six Zollingers and two Freisingers serve at the traditional Epiphany Tournament of the SpVgg Zolling.
Toni Stippler and Herbert Jarczyk are in a difficult group.
Zolling – The SpVgg Zolling Epiphany Tournament is one of the outstanding tennis events in the district – and it feels like the field is getting stronger every year.
The tournament started on Friday with the group matches, before the hot phase begins on Saturday afternoon in the Zollinger tennis hall with the quarter-finals.
This year, there are six Zollingers (Toni Stippler, Philipp Knieper, Herbert Jarczyk, Stefan Hegedusch, Markus Staringer, Karim Bensaada) and two Freisingers (Andreas Werz, Dominik Pescolderung) in the four groups of four in the Masters.
Stippler sets an exclamation mark - duel with Jarczyk is groundbreaking
A first local derby was Stefan Hegedusch's hard-fought 2:6, 6:4, 10:7 against Dominik Pescolderung from Freising.
With another success, Hegedusch was the first player to bag a place in the quarter-finals.
The first tournament shock was a real hammer group with two Zollingers: Toni Stippler and Herbert Jarczyk were drawn together, and with defending champion Daniel Geiger (Vilsbiburg) another big chunk was added.
Lucas Böhm (Taufkirchen), fourth in the group, would also have been the favorite in the other groups with a performance class of 3.8.
Stippler set a first exclamation mark on Friday with a grandiose 6:0, 6:2 against Böhm.
Jarczyk, on the other hand, started with a 4:6, 4:6 defeat against tournament favorite Geiger.
After the direct duel on Saturday morning, only one of the two Zollingers should advance.
(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)
After the group stage, the field of the remaining eight players is drawn again.
The quarter-finals will be played on Saturday from 4 p.m., then the semi-finals on Sunday morning and the final from 3 p.m.
Toni Stippler has just as much chance of winning as Vilsbiburg's defending champion Daniel Geiger (30th place in the German rankings for men 30) and Florian Hennig from Zorneding (4th place in Germany for men's 35).
The men's doubles final will also take place on Sunday.
The last twice victorious Zollinger double Hegedusch/Lehner is only an outsider this time.
At the top of the seeding list are the doubles Stippler/Knieper (Zolling) and Geiger/Weindl (Vilsbiburg).
