Garmisch-Partenkirchen - The sad news spread like wildfire: Rosi Mittermaier is dead. The German ski legend died on January 4, 2023 at the age of 72.
The former double Olympic champion was seriously ill (which is known about her cause of death).

It happened in the forest: Christian Neureuther was bitten by a tick while working with wood.
In mid-2021, the German winter sports legend became infected with tick-borne encephalitis, or TBE for short, also known colloquially as meningitis.
A disease that can take a serious and dangerous course - and in the worst case, be fatal.
Now, in October 2021, Neureuther gave oppressive insights into one of the most dangerous races of his life.
The good news: the then 72-year-old won it.

I didn't even notice the tick bite.
It wasn't until a few weeks after making wood that I didn't feel well.
I thought it was shingles.
After pressure from our son, I went to the Garmisch hospital.”

Fortunately, Felix Neureuther, himself a German ski icon, had the right instincts.
Neureuther Senior was then examined in the clinic.
It quickly became clear: Meningitis!
The former slalom specialist was hit really hard.
"I don't remember the first week.
I was completely apathetic, had disturbances of consciousness and probably also a fever," said Christian Neureuther in autumn 2021 to the

And further: “I then came to the Innsbruck Clinic in the neurological department.
My brain stopped working properly.
Before my eyes everything swam from left to right.
The dizziness was madness.
At night when I had to go to the toilet, it really hit me against the wall.
I couldn't stand up straight."

Ski icon Christian Neureuther in the hospital for weeks: family helped him in difficult times
Luckily, Neureuther picked himself up at the end of 2021.
He was better, also thanks to the subsequent treatment in a rehabilitation clinic in Thiersee, Austria.

, he was treated there for three weeks.
As a result, Neureuther still had severe back pain, low blood pressure and found it difficult to turn his head.
But: "It will be fine again," he said in his usual Bavarian-optimistic way. What helped him in these difficult times?
Sure, the family!
His wife Rosi Mittermaier, Olympic and world champion, never left his side.
Son Felix and daughter Ameli helped where they could.
The Neureuthers once again stuck together.
Christian Neureuther soon got better again: "Never despaired during this bad phase"
At that time, in autumn 2021, Christian Neureuther was still confident: "I firmly believe that the psyche also helps and heals a lot.
I was actually never desperate during this bad phase.
As a family, we said: We can do it. I had the very best doctors, my Rosi, our children and grandchildren.”
