bad luck
Tennis player Venus Williams withdrew today (Saturday) from the Australian Open because of an unknown injury she sustained while playing this week in a tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.
Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, was given a free pass to the Australian Open last month to compete in what would have been her 22nd appearance at Melbourne Park.
But organizers of the Australian Open said the 42-year-old tennis player, ranked 1003 in the world, had withdrawn from the tournament which starts on January 16, but did not provide details about the injury.
It continues a run of bad luck for Williams, who last played at Melbourne Park in 2021.
That year, the former Australian Open finalist injured her ankle and knee in this performance when she tripped awkwardly at the net in her second-round match against Sarah Arrani.
Her greatest moments at Melbourne Park came when she was beaten by her sister Serena Williams in the finals in 2003 and 2017.
This Thursday, the opening Grand Slam draw of the year will take place, when in the men's category, Novak Djokovic will try to achieve his tenth win, this after not playing in the tournament since 2021, due to the corona restrictions in the country and after he refused to be vaccinated.
