Despite a largely superior game, ESC Dorfen had to admit defeat at ESC Kempten 2:3 (1:2, 0:0, 1:0; 0:1) on Sunday evening.

And again after an extension.

Dorfen – With Christof Hradek, who was still suspended on Friday, Dorfen started the 190 kilometers to the Allgäu to catch up.

While the ice pirates got a shot across the bow against Pegnitz on Friday, the hosts, who were not playing, were able to get in the mood for their first game of 2023.

And an extremely important one, because with 38 points in eighth place, their pursuers are breathing down their necks in the fight for participation in the championship round.

The Sharks weren't necessarily better than the Ice Pirates in the first 20 minutes, but they were more active - the home team.

And they were safer in the combination game, also thanks to their "old" masters.

Captain Eric Nadeau is now 48 years old, which doesn't show at all in his game.

The former Extraliga player Rostislav Martynek is 40. The Czech had his racket in the game for both Kempten goals by Daniel Rau to make it 1-0 early and Timo Schirrmacher's number goal to make it 2-1 at the break.

Josef Folger was wide awake when he used a puck loss from Kempten to score an equalizer in Dorfen.

A heavy burden for the second third meant for Dorfen Fabian Kanzelsberger's five plus playing time for "Knee check" 27 seconds before the siren.

It didn't look good for the injured Kemptener Anton Zimmer, but from Dorfen's point of view, he had collided with the ESC defender who was not moving.

The long manpower was survived unscathed, also thanks to a monster save by keeper Andi Marek.

The ice pirates were clearly dominating the rest of the second third, only hits were missing.

The well-known luck of the shot was also missing when, for example, Lukas Kirsch or Felix Wiedenhofer, who were ready to shoot, the puck jumped in front of the Kempten goal.

There was no penalty at all in the second period and only a two against Kempten's Pascal Kröber in the last 20 minutes.

The Ice Pirates' attack was finally rewarded with a good three minutes before the end with Kirsch's equalizer.

The post prevented another Dorfen goal and it went into five minutes overtime – for Dorfen for the eighth time and for Kempten for the seventh time.

Only twice have both of these encores emerged as winners so far.

Martynek gave the Sharks victory and an extra point with 68 seconds remaining in the shootout.

Statistics:

Goals/Assists: 1:0 (4th) Rau (Martynek), 1:1 (13th) Folger (Lönnig), 2:1 (16th) Schirrmacher (Martynek, Gosselin/5-4), 2:2 ( 57.) Kirsch (Susanj, Sodja), 3: 2 (64.) Martynek – HSR: Stefan Velkoski – penalty minutes: ESCK 2, ESCD 7+20 – spectators: 401.
