In his retirement announcement, Bale wrote: "After much thought, I am announcing my immediate retirement from national team and club football. I feel fortunate to have fulfilled my dream of playing in the sport I loved and through which I experienced the best moments of my life. I was at the top for 17 seasons and that will be difficult to repeat, Regardless of what the next chapter holds for me. From first touching the ball in Southampton to most recently in Los Angeles and everything in between, I've carved out a career that I'm proud of and grateful for. I've made a dream come true when I got to play 111 times for my national team and serve as captain. It's impossible to thank everyone enough Whoever was a part of the journey, I owe a lot to so many people who helped me shape my career in a way that I could not have dreamed of when I started playing soccer at the age of 9."

Bale grew up in Southampton, made his big break afterwards in the Tottenham uniform and in 2013 was bought by Real Madrid for a then record sum of around 100 million euros.
Already in his first season he helped the Blancos win the Champions League and the Spanish Cup, where he also scored in both finals.
A season later he also won the European Super Cup and the final of the World Team Championship, where he found the net.
He lifted the coveted European Cup with Real four more times, with the most memorable moment of all being the spectacular goal against Liverpool in the 2018 final.
