The Welsh international who grew up in Southampton and played for Real Madrid and Tottenham decided to hang up his boots after a 17-year career

Gareth Bale, one of the greatest players in world football in recent years, announced today (Monday) his retirement from football.

The 33-year-old Welsh international, who left Real Madrid last summer and signed with Los Angeles from the MLS league, continued to play to fulfill his World Cup dream and has now decided to end his professional career in the industry.

Bale began his professional career in Southampton, from where he moved to Tottenham in 2007. In 2013, he was purchased by Real Madrid for a then-record sum of 100 million euros, and the Welshman played in their ranks until last summer, when he signed in Los Angeles.

Already in his first season, he helped the Blancos win the Champions League and the Spanish Cup, when he also scored in both finals.

A season later, the Welsh also won the European Super Cup and the final of the World Team Championship, where he found the net.

In addition, he lifted the coveted European Cup with Real four more times, with the most memorable moment of all being the spectacular goal against Liverpool in the Champions League final in 2018.

Throughout his career in his various teams, he made 554 appearances, in which he scored 186 goals and assisted 139 more.

In the national uniform he played 111 games, scored 40 goals and led the team to the Euro and the World Cup.

In his retirement announcement, Bale wrote: "After much thought, I am announcing my immediate retirement from national team and club football. I feel fortunate to have fulfilled my dream of playing in the sport I loved and through which I experienced the best moments of my life. I was at the top for 17 seasons and that will be difficult to repeat, Regardless of what the next chapter holds for me. From first touching the ball in Southampton to most recently in Los Angeles and everything in between, I have shaped a career that I am proud of and grateful for."

"I fulfilled a dream when I got to play 111 times in my team and serve as captain. It is impossible to thank everyone who was a part of the journey, I owe a lot to so many people who helped me shape my career in a way that I could not have dreamed of when I started playing football at the age of 9", concluded the Welshman.
