The former Iranian footballer, Amir Nasser Azdani, was sent to prison for 26 years and "escaped" the death penalty.
According to some reports, he will face a parole board in 5 years and if he receives a refusal, he will face it again in 10 years.
Azdani was arrested in November after being accused of involvement in the death of three security personnel during the protests in Iran.
Two other people who were accused together with him were executed yesterday and a fourth person was himself sent to prison.
The arrest of 26-year-old Azdani, a former defender in Iran's top league who retired in 2018 due to injury, caused an uproar.
The International Association of Footballers published worried messages and the singer Shakira expressed public support for him.
When it was announced that he was facing the death penalty, a petition calling for his life to be spared was set up and collected over 1.5 million signatures.

In Iran they claimed that Nasser Azdani appeared together with two other defendants on local television on November 20 and read a forced confession, even though he was not connected to the death of those three security personnel.
He was eventually sentenced to prison for participating in the demonstrations.
