VfB keeper Florian Müller on strenuous training under Labbadia: "It's good for us"

As the regular keeper at VfB Stuttgart, Florian Müller tries to keep his goal clean.
BW24 spoke to him at the training camp in Marbella about coach Bruno Labbadia, the lack of leading players and the upcoming relegation battle.

How do you rate the performance?
It was a decent game from us.
It was important that everyone went beyond their limits.
We worked a lot in the training camp and had strenuous sessions.
It had to hurt at times.
Everyone accepted that and we left everything on the field.

Going forward we showed good attacks and could have scored a goal or two more.
On the other hand, we defended almost everything at the back, which is why we can be satisfied.
But there is still a lot of work ahead of us.

Why is it so difficult for the team to talk to each other during the game?
We need to work better together as a collective.
It's not about screaming great.
Rather, it is about short commands that everyone can give to the person in front.
We're working on that because it's important to our game.
We're on the right track, but against Sion you could see that there's still room for improvement.

Throughout the game I try to help my fellow players with commands.
It's often a bit easier for me in test matches than in a full stadium, because you rarely get to hear the whole team because it's so loud.
VfB Stuttgart doesn't have many leading players. Why are you one of the few?
I try to fulfill my role and support my teammates.
I've already played a few Bundesliga games and I'm trying to pass on this experience.
So do you see yourself as a leader?
Let others judge that.
I try to do my job as well as possible and help my teammates with my experience.
We spend a lot of time on the training ground, which is sometimes exhausting.
But that's good for us.

He talks to us a lot and gives valuable tips.
He has already gained a lot of experience as a player and as a coach.
He knows what he's doing.
We trust him completely and go with him.
We saw some of what we trained in the friendly against Sion.
We now want to continue this process together.
Many say that training under Bruno Labbadia has become tougher. As a goalkeeper, do you notice that too?
Yes.
We've already completed a lot of units, we're on the training ground often and for a long time, which is sometimes exhausting.
But that's good for us.
We were still lively in the test match and were able to step on the gas.
That's the base we need.

What do you say to the critics who claim that you rarely secure points for VfB with strong performances?
I generally read very little about myself and concentrate on the things that I can influence.
In December in the friendly against Lucerne, a ball slipped through your fingers, which led to the goal being conceded. How do you deal with such situations?
I analyze such situations together with our goalkeeping coach.
Then it is important to check something like that off and concentrate on the next training session.
You have a good relationship with your rival, Fabian Bredlow, which is unusual among goalkeepers. But do you also feel the pressure from him? After all, he also wants to play.
Everyone on our team wants to play.
Competition is completely normal and increases the quality of training.
We get along really well, but that has nothing to do with the competitive situation.
Everyone is doing their best, everyone is trying to play.
Why does VfB Stuttgart manage to stay up?
Because we have a lot of quality in the team and will really step on the gas.
We've worked hard over the past three weeks and we're still trying to improve.
We will continue to give everything to make it in the end.
