Two horses have caused a stir at a show race in Queensland after escaping the event at Surfers Paradise Beach and galloping down a highway. Traffic came to a standstill there.

An incident occurred during a show race in Queensland, Australia.

Two horses escaped from an annual race at Surfers Paradise Beach and ended up on an adjacent highway.

A video shows how several animals lost their riders before, one horse fell into the waves.

Two animals then galloped riderless over the dunes and into the road.

They also crossed light rail tracks and the Gold Coast Highway.

As reported by the Australian newspaper The Age and the British Daily Mail, citing the police, the horses had traveled more than a kilometer on the highway before they could be caught.

As reported by The Age, traffic on the southbound highway was temporarily halted as horses galloped around cars.

Finally, they are said to have been picked up in a nearby residential complex.

Horses and jockeys were unharmed

The promoter, Magic Millions, said in a statement that the horses were returned unharmed.

They had been examined by a vet.

The jockeys were not injured either.

The races are a public spectacle, with hundreds of spectators watching the jockeys and celebrities, according to The Age.

The organizers cordoned off the beach with metal barricades for several hundred meters to keep visitors away from the race track.

The horses escaped over the plastic fences at one end.
