Handball World Cup 2023: schedule, groups and results

The Handball World Championship will be held in Poland and Sweden from January 11th. Denmark is hoping for a special record. The German selection is once again just an outsider. Everything you need to know about the event can be found here.

Can Denmark win the title hat-trick?

The selection around superstar Mikkel Hansen could triumph as the first nation three times in a row at a handball world championship.

The chances are not bad.

The World Cup, held in Poland and Sweden, begins on January 11th and ends with the final on January 29th in Kraków in front of more than 15,000 fans.

Germany has also qualified and will face Qatar, Serbia and Algeria in Group E.

The favourites

Wie schon in den Jahren zuvor zählt Deutschland nicht zum Kreis der Topfavoriten. Stattdessen werden Frankreich (Olympiasieger), Dänemark (Weltmeister), Schweden (Europameister) und Spanien die besten Chancen eingeräumt. Die dänische Auswahl kann wieder auf den dreifachen Welthandballer Mikkel Hansen bauen, der nach Herzrhythmusstörungen und einer Lungenembolie zurückkehrt. Bei der Équipe peilt Superstar Nikola Karabatic im Alter von 38 Jahren seine elfte Goldmedaille bei einem Großereignis an, Star des Teams ist jedoch Dika Mem vom FC Barcelona. Schweden hofft auch auf den Heimvorteil.

Polen als Co-Gastgeber, Slowenien, Island, Kroatien um Domagoj Duvnjak (THW Kiel) und auch Deutschland gelten als mögliche Überraschungskandidaten auf den Titel. Für den Fall, dass sich das deutsche Team von Bundestrainer Alfreð Gíslason für die Hauptrunde qualifiziert, würde sie auf die drei besten Teams der Vorrundengruppe F treffen (Argentinien, Niederlande, Nordmazedonien oder Norwegen).

Der Modus

Erst zum zweiten Mal nach 2021 nehmen 32 Nationen an der WM teil. Die Teams verteilen sich auf insgesamt acht Gruppen. Die jeweils drei besten Länder qualifizieren sich für die anschließend beginnende Hauptrunde. Dort werden dann in vier Sechsergruppen die Viertelfinalisten ermittelt. Wichtig: Die Mannschaften nehmen ihre Punkte mit, die sie in der Vorrunde gegen ebenfalls qualifizierte Nationen gewonnen haben.

Über die K.o.-Phase hinaus, die am 29. Januar mit dem Finale endet, gibt es auch noch den sogenannten President's Cup. Dort duellieren sich die jeweils Viertplatzierten der Gruppenphase um die Plätze 25 bis 32 zu ermitteln.
