In November he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a fall, now the Swiss ski racer Mauro Caviezel suddenly ended his career.

Muri – In recent weeks there have been some surprising resignations from prominent athletes in winter sports, more precisely in ski racing.

The Austrian Matthias Mayer announced the end of his career in front of the camera in Bormio, and the Swiss Beat Feuz will contest his last race as an active ski racer in Kitzbühel next weekend.

On Tuesday, Feuz' compatriot Mauro Caviezel announced the end of his career, the 34-year-old had only recently survived his second serious fall.

Mauro Caviezel

Born: August 18, 1988 in Tumegl, Domleschg (Switzerland)

Disciplines: Downhill, Super-G, Combination

Mauro Caviezel: Swiss ski racer announces the end of his career with immediate effect

With Caviezel, the third famous skier is already ending his eventful career, which he announced via the Swiss Ski Association.

"I'm fine after my recent injury.

Unfortunately not good enough to get back into ski racing," the Graubünden native was quoted as saying on the association's website.

Caviezel is ending his career with immediate effect, which is a setback for the Swiss association given his success.

In the 2019/20 season, the native of Tomils won the Super-G World Cup, and at the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz he surprisingly won the bronze medal in the combination.

He also landed on the podium a total of twelve times in the World Cup, but he only won one race in December 2020 in Val d'Isère.

The ski racer from the Beverin Ski Club also took part in the Winter Olympics twice, in 2014 he finished 28th in the giant slalom in Sochi, four years later he was twelfth in the alpine combined and thirteenth in the downhill in Pyeongchang.

Caviezel was also able to impress at national level, winning a total of three Swiss championship titles.

In 2011 and 2014 he was the best Swiss in the Super-G, in 2015 he won the title of his home country in the downhill.

But during his career he not only celebrated successes, he also got to know the downsides of ski racing.

Mauro Caviezel: Two serious falls affected his career

Caviezel's career was also marked by serious injuries.

In November 2011 he had his first serious fall at the FIS giant slalom in Zinal and escaped with a dislocated shoulder, a cruciate ligament tear and injuries to the lateral meniscus of his left knee.

As a result, he missed the 2011/12 season.

In recent years, however, there have been serious falls and two head injuries in particular.

In January 2021, Caviezel suffered a traumatic brain injury during a fall during Super-G training in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which led to the first visual disturbances.

Last November he made his comeback at the Super-G in Lake Louise, Canada, and fell again with serious consequences.

Again he suffered a craniocerebral trauma, ultimately this injury cost him his career.

"With a clear head and after careful consideration, I unfortunately had to admit with a heavy heart that the time had come for me to retire as an active ski racer," said Caviezel.

He has not yet commented on his plans for the future.
