The European Swimming Association (LEN) has decided to move the European Water Polo Championships in Israel to the end of December.
As a result, the Israeli union had to transfer the hosting to the Wingate Institute, after the other alternatives were occupied.
The change is due to the fact that the European Union wanted to hold the championship before the World Championship, while the Israeli Water Polo Association continues as usual in preparations to host the European Senior Championships - the biggest ball sports event ever in Israel.
After examining the various professional alternatives, the union chose the most suitable professional option for hosting the competition - the national pool at the Wingate Institute.
The championship, which will include 16 men's teams and 16 women's teams, will start at the end of December 2023 and last two weeks, with the men's and women's champions winning a ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
The water polo association stated: "We thank the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Wingate Institute for their support in hosting the championship in Israel. Also, to the European Union LEN for the trust it expresses in the Israeli association to host the championship."
Minister of Culture and Sports Miki Zohar: "I congratulate the Water Polo Association for holding the European Championship here in Israel at the National Sports Institute - Wingate Institute.
We will continue to promote international events and bring them to the State of Israel so that they make us proud and place Israel on the world sports map.'
