The Australian Open tennis championship started tonight (between Sunday and Monday) with quite a few matches, but the retirement announcement of the local player Nick Kyrius, grabbed the heart of the headlines.
The Australian, who was supposed to play against the Russian Roman Safiulin in the first round, injured his knee during training, and apparently he is suffering from a torn meniscus.
"It's very disappointing," Kyrius admitted in tears, "I'm devastated. It's too cruel. This is my home tournament, and especially after winning the doubles last year I came with the goal of playing the best tennis of my life.
"It's a shame that it happened before one of the most important tournaments in my career. The timing is just bad, but that's life. Injuries are part of our sport and I'll have to deal with it now."
Get well soon, Nick ❤️#AusOpen • #AO2023
