In the shadow of the war in Ukraine and the suspension of Russian athletes from many competitions around the world, Israel may receive a boost from an unexpected direction.
The couple Gleb Smolkin and Diana Davis, who compete together in figure skating, began to seriously look into the possibility of representing Israel in light of the fact that Smolkin's grandfather is Jewish.
Smolkin and Davis, the former 23 and the latter 19, competed in the last Winter Olympics and finished 14th.
At the last European Championships they were ranked seventh and they won medals in highly regarded competitions in Poland (gold) and the USA (silver). They are considered promising skaters whose peak is still ahead of them, but after the war broke out, they were forced to participate in local competitions only.
Davis was born in the USA to an American father and a Russian mother - the figure skating coach Etri Tutbridze. When she was three years old, she moved with her mother to Russia, grew up and was educated there. Smolkin was born in St. Petersburg. The two spent long periods of time training specifically in Michigan in the USA and not in Russia.
Davis and Smolkin got married a few months ago and, as mentioned, they recently started looking into the possibility of getting an Israeli identity card thanks to the husband's Jewish roots, so that they could participate in international competitions.

Israel was previously represented by several athletes in figure skating.
Most of them did not live and train in Israel.
