On the grounds of Al-Jalaa Sports City in Damascus, the Arab Weightlifting Championship was opened today, with the participation of 120 male and female players representing the teams of Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, Jordan, Libya, Palestine and Sudan, in addition to Syria.
During the opening ceremony, dance performances were presented, a documentary film was presented on the Syrian city of Amrit, the establishment of the Olympic Games there, a film on the Syrian sport of weightlifting, and the distinguished level enjoyed by Syrian weightlifters.
The President of the General Sports Federation, Firas Mualla, pointed out in his speech during the opening to the importance of holding this championship in Syria, indicating the great role played by the International Federation of Sports in organizing the championship in Syria, which spared no effort in supporting Syrian weightlifting, especially since the Syrian weightlifters are competitors. The first in international tournaments.
The President of the International Weightlifting Federation, Muhammad Hassan Jalloud, stressed the importance of the achievements made by the Syrian weightlifters in many foreign championships, most notably the bronze of Maan Asaad at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, within the weight competitions above 109 kg, and the bronze of the player himself in the world championships, expressing the federation’s willingness to present The support required for the Syrian weightlifters to continue to shine on the podiums at the international level.
President of the Weightlifting Federation, Hassanein Al-Sheikh, indicated that this championship is a good start for the return of competitions between Arab lifters in Syria, and we are seeking, in coordination with the International Federation, to expand further to include international championships, expecting that the competitions will be strong and competitive.
