After the early end of defending champion Rafael Nadal, last year's finalist Daniil Medvedev failed surprisingly early at the Australian Open.

The top Russian player lost in Melbourne in the third round against American tennis pro Sebastian Korda in just three sets 6:7 (7:9), 3:6, 6:7 (4:7).

"Really impressive.

Big compliment," said tennis legend Boris Becker as an expert at Eurosport about the young American.

The 22-year-old Korda is in the round of 16 of the first Grand Slam tournament of the season for the first time and is now meeting Hubert Hurkacz from Poland.

His father, Petr Korda, won the 1998 Australian Open for the Czech Republic.

Sebastian Korda won the junior title five years ago.

Last season, Medvedev was close to triumphing at the Australian Open in Meldbourne when he beat Nadal 2-0 in sets.

At the French Open and in New York 2022, it was the last 16, and Medvedev, like all other professionals from Russia and Belarus, was excluded from Wimbledon because of the war in Ukraine.

In this year's edition, in addition to the Spanish tennis star Nadal, the Norwegian world number three Casper Ruud had to give up his hopes of winning the title early on.

The focus is even more on the Serbian record champion Novak Djoković, who will play against the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrow on Saturday for a place in the round of 16.
