Italy's cyber police announced today (Friday) that they arrested 12 people, following "defamatory and sexist" comments they posted on the photo of artistic swimmer Linda Cerotti.
Cerotti, who won 8 medals at the last European Championship held in August in Rome, uploaded a photo of herself on Instagram on the beach, where she wore a bikini and hung all the medals on her legs, which quickly made the post viral, leading to thousands of comments and hundreds of thousands of likes.

Among the many responses that congratulated her were also quite a few offensive messages, when according to the Italian news agency ANSA, after weeks of investigation by the Cyber Security Operations Center in Genoa, the police located 12 people who wrote "obviously insulting and sexist posts" and all of them will now face defamation charges.
According to Italian law, those found guilty of this section of aggravated defamation are fined thousands of euros, depending on the severity of the crime.
Cerotti is considered one of the most prominent athletes in Italy and an outstanding artistic swimmer, when last year she won a silver medal and 2 bronze medals at the World Championships in Budapest, and her resume also includes silver at the World Championships in 2019, in addition to 9 silver medals and 14 bronze medals at the European Championships .
