SC Freiburg started the new calendar year in second place, but promptly suffered a sensitive defeat at VfL Wolfsburg.

Bochum scored an important win in the relegation battle against Hertha BSC.

Schalke was unlucky to lose in Frankfurt, there was no winner in Stuttgart against Mainz.

Union Berlin won against Hoffenheim shortly before the end.

RB Leipzig and FC Bayern Munich drew 1-1 (0-1) yesterday Friday.

Eintracht Frankfurt started the 2023 calendar year against their favorite opponents: Eintracht Frankfurt won no other team in the Bundesliga more often at home than S04, and in the last ten home games there was no defeat against the bottom of the table.

But Schalke, shaken by poor preparation and numerous injuries, started briskly.

S04 played, Eintracht scored: Jesper Lindström prevailed one-on-one after a counterattack and scored into the upper goal corner (22nd minute).

The guests reacted promptly, but only hit aluminum twice: Simon Terodde's header steered Kevin Trapp to the post (28'), then Soichiro Kozuki shot from the inside right almost to the same spot (32').

Kozuki again forced Tapp to make a brilliant save with a header in the 46th minute.

Schalke still strong, but Rafael Borré with the knock-out and the 2:0 (84th) for Frankfurt, Buta even scored to 3:0 (90+1).

With the win, Eintracht moves up to second place, S04 remains last.

"Relegation battle is special, relegation battle is no fun," said Stuttgart's new coach Bruno Labbadia before the game.

Almost exactly two years to the day after being fired from Hertha BSC, the 56-year-old returned to the Bundesliga.

And the new coach gave his team a new system, VfB played in 4-3-3.

Almost nothing happened for more than half an hour, then things got wild: First Serhou Guirassy scored to give Stuttgart the lead (36'), but just a few minutes later Marcus Ingvartsen equalized with a penalty kick (40').

The game varied, with Mainz's Aymen Barkok (56') and Guirassy (60') hitting the crossbar.

Joshua Vagnoman missed the last excellent opportunity of the game in the 88th minute when he fired over the goal from three meters.

While access Kasper Dolberg, 35-time Denmark international striker, experienced the start of the game on the bench, 17-year-old Tom Bischof celebrated his starting XI debut for Hoffenheim.

And in the 8th minute, standing freely at the penalty spot, he missed the great opportunity to guide the visitors.

Union, weakened by Ryerson's short-term departure to Borussia Dortmund, almost took the lead shortly before, but Sheraldo Becker chased a direct acceptance just over the goal.

Becker's strike partner Jordan Siebatcheu missed an even better chance in the 25th minute: he put a hand penalty on the left post.

Ihlas Bebou, who caused the penalty, gave TSG the lead after a wonderful counterattack from the inside right (43') – on his first appearance of the season.

Union pressed in the second half, but also missed the best chances through Christopher Trimmel (55'), before a corner equalized: Danilho Doekhi scored with a header (73').

And it was Deokhi who turned the game around just before the end – 2-1 with a header for Union.

With the last action, Jamie Lewelling crowned a counterattack to make it 3:1 (90+6).

VfL Bochum has taken an important step out of the relegation zone.

Against their direct competitor for relegation, Hertha BSC, Bochum landed a 3-0 (2-0) win.

VfL climbs to 14th place, while Hertha falls to the penultimate place in the table.

The game had actually started promisingly for the Berliners.

The guests were already celebrating after ten minutes because Lucas Tousart had scored the goal.

However, Jean-Paul Boetius had only crossed when the ball was already out of goal, so the goal was not recognised.

In return, the hosts struck.

First Philipp Hofmann headed the ball into the Hertha goal in the 22nd minute, then the newly signed Keven Schlotterbeck also managed to increase the lead with a header shortly before the break.

After the break, the course of the game was similar.

Hertha tried, Bochum scored, Philipp Hofmann scored again (57th minute).

With that the game was decided.

In the 87th minute, Suat Serdar was only able to reduce the deficit to 1:3.

VfL Wolfsburg had a perfect start to the new year.

Coach Niko Kovac's team won against SC Freiburg 5-0 (3-0) and showed remarkable effectiveness, especially in the first half.

From five shots on goal, Wolfsburg made three goals against an otherwise equal Freiburg team.

After just two minutes, the hosts were able to celebrate for the first time when Patrik Wimmer, served by Jonas Wind, scored an ice-cold shot.

Wolfsburg also had their best players in Wimmer and Wind, who had been injured for a long time. The Dane had a significant part in the success with his two goals in the 28th and 37th minutes.

After the change, the guests struggled to catch up, but Wolfsburg dashed all hopes after 56 minutes with Yannick Gerhardt's 4-0.

Ridle Baku made the Freiburg debacle perfect in the 80th minute with the 5:0.

In injury time, Luca Waldschmidt even increased the lead to 6-0 with a penalty.

This is a setback for Christian Streich's team, Freiburg had to vacate second place in the table.
