Jurgen Klopp celebrated his anniversary, but his players couldn't give him a present. Liverpool only managed a goalless draw against Chelsea. That doesn't help either team.

It was the 1000th competitive game for coach Jürgen Klopp.

But he's unlikely to remember it fondly.

Against Chelsea, his Liverpool FC did not get beyond an unattractive 0-0 draw.

Both teams are still on the spot and remain in the middle of the table.

270 games with Mainz, 319 with Borussia Dortmund, now 411 with Liverpool, at least that's what the data service provider Opta has compiled for Klopp.

However, the coach missed a second anniversary: a success over Chelsea would have been his 250th victory as Liverpool coach.

The first half was less than three minutes old when the ball was already in the Liverpool goal.

Kai Havertz had pushed a rebound over the line after the first Chelsea corner, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

The scene seemed to promise an exciting game - but it remained the only highlight of the game for a long time.

Both teams started without numerous top performers, with Chelsea initially only having €100m signing Michajlo Mudryk from Ukraine on the bench.

Jürgen Klopp trusted the only 18-year-old Spaniard Stefan Bajčetić, who made a decent game.

Both teams noticed that they were in a crisis.

For years the duel was a top game, this time the table ninth and table tenth met.

The level was accordingly.

There were hardly any chances in the first half.

Logically it was 0-0 at the break.

After the change, the hosts increased the pressure and Chelsea were pushed back into their own half.

In particular, Dutchman Cody Gakpo, who moved to Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in the winter, excelled.

Mudryk came, no goals were scored

Chelsea coach Graham Potter responded and brought in Mudryk, who made his debut for the Blues and later hit the side netting in a first conspicuous scene.

That didn't bring much more relief for the Londoners, however, Liverpool remained the dominant team - but without capitalizing on it.

Gakpo missed a good chance to score, and Chelsea countered dangerously in injury time, but the score remained 0-0.
