Borussia Dortmund defeated FC Augsburg 4:3 (2:2) in an exciting game and thus successfully restarted the season.

However, the victory was tedious, the guests had equalized the Dortmund lead three times and repeatedly benefited from defensive blunders.

BVB started with the new signing Julian Ryerson on the right side of defence, in defense Mats Hummels was given preference over Niklas Süle.

Youssoufa Moukoko, who just renewed his contract after weeks of playing poker, also started.

With the guest from Augsburg, Arne Engels and Dion Beljo included two of the five winter purchases in the starting XI.

Shortly after kick-off, a third came in Irvin Crdona because Ruben Vargas was unable to continue after a foul by Hummels.

Bellingham started things off

Dortmund put pressure on from the start, Augsburg played largely defensively.

Nevertheless, it took more than 20 minutes until the first good opportunity for black and yellow.

Moukoko put the ball past goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz, but also on goal.

That happened in the 30th minute.

Jude Bellingham, who excelled in the offensive, skilfully hooked the penalty area, suddenly spotted a gap and closed precisely to make it 1-0.

Completely surprisingly, the guests equalized after 39 minutes because Nico Schlotterbeck frittered away a ball against Beljo in his own penalty area, Arne Maier benefited from this and pushed in to make it 1-1.

The score didn't last long.

Just two minutes later Dortmund were in the lead again, Schlotterbeck made up for his mistake and headed in Julian Brandt's free kick to make it 2-1.

But even that wasn't half-time, this time it was the turn of the extremely effective Augsburg team.

Ermedin Demirovic got his fill in the 45th minute, Ryerson couldn't clear it anymore and deflected the ball into his own goal.

So it went surprisingly 2:2 at the break.

After an hour it got really loud in the stadium again: Sebastien Haller returned to the pitch for the first time after his testicular cancer and played his first Bundesliga game for Dortmund.

For him, the weak Moukoko had to leave the place.

Despite this, Borussia found it increasingly difficult, compared to the first half not much succeeded.

Augsburg was far more active than before the break.

In this respect, the Dortmund leadership fell.

Substitute Jamie Bynoe-Gittens scored from long range to make it 3-2 in the 75th minute.

It went on: First Augsburg countered, also with a player who had just been substituted on: David Colina again used Dortmund's defensive errors to make it 3:3.

Consequentially, it was Dortmund's turn again: Gio Reyna made it 4:3.

That ended the back and forth and BVB had won.
