In November 2019, it was reported that Esterman was found guilty of violating the Animal Cruelty Act by a Swiss court, as a result of which Esterman announced that he would stop representing his country immediately until the appeal that took place in January 2021. At the same time, it was determined that the athlete was guilty of several counts of "intentional animal cruelty" Against Castlefield Eclipse in April 2016, and against Lord Pepsi in 2015.

The case was taken to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court, and in March 2022 Esterman's appeal was "partially accepted", which apparently led to the decision of the Swiss Cycling Federation to order his suspension.
