Bottom of the Bundesliga against Bayern pursuers: The opening game of matchday 17 had a clear favorite – and he lived up to his role: RB Leipzig beat Schalke 04 6-1 (4-0) in their own stadium and are now back on the field for the time being second place in the table.

After just a few minutes, Leipzig took the lead.

A long ball, a disorderly defensive work - and a powerful shot from about 17 meters, it was already 1-0 for the guests (7th minute).

André Silva placed the ball in the bottom left corner of the Schalke goal.

The tone of the evening was set.

Schalke's keeper Alexander Schwolow was able to parry a long-range shot from Leipzig's Dominik Szoboszlai (10'), but after a break Benjamin Henrichs was completely free on the right side of the penalty area and confidently converted the goal to make it 2-0 (15').

Schalke's short gasp

And so the debacle continued: Konrad Laimer's attempt (19') and an offside goal by Dani Olmo (22') did not result in the third goal, but shortly before the half-time break it was Silva (44') and Timo Werner again (45+2) who scored from close range.

Schalke were said goodbye to the break with loud whistles.

And the players seemed to have taken that to heart.

The Japanese Sōichirō Kōzuki broke away from his guards after a pass with a contact worth seeing and actually scored to 1: 4 (56th).

There was an uproar, but it didn't last long.

Leipzig got into the game better again and Silva almost scored his third goal with his shot in the 78th minute, Schalke keeper Schwolow prevented that. The fifth goal came anyway, Olmo flicked the ball fantastically into the top corner (83.) .

Yussuf Poulsen set the final point, who completed the half-dozen after a run down (89th).
