Maximilian Ulbrich was plagued by pain throughout the European Championship qualification competition.

However, the Wilzhofener was rewarded for all the drudgery.

Wilzhofen

– It was torture.

The back pain just wouldn't go away.

Maximilian Ulbrich had to overcome himself with every shot to get it clean on target.

When the airgun shooter from Wilzhofen completed the first program, the scoreboard showed 629.9 points as a reward.

"It was a struggle," he moaned.

Nevertheless, it paid off.

Maximilian Ulbrich finishes the European Championship qualification in second place

In qualifying for the European Championships, the 22-year-old not only delivered the second-best result in the first competition, he also posted the second-best result overall.

In addition to Maximilian Dallinger, who was the first with 1885.5 points, and David Koenders (1880.9), Ulbrich (1884.2) is going to the European Championships in Tallinn (March 5th to 15th).

"The trainers were proud of us," said Ulbrich, who was happy about the first laurels, which were distributed on the spot in Wiesbaden.

The trio forms a joint training group in Munich.

"It's the strongest team I can imagine," says Ulbrich, looking forward to the joint trip to the capital of Estonia.

"This is going to be really cool."

628 rings on average mean a new personal record for Ulbrich

This is the first successfully passed qualification for the senior police officer in the top sports promotion group of the Bavarian police since he has been active in the senior sector.

He last took part in a European Championship four years ago, but at that time it was still in the juniors.

His 628 rings mean a personal record for him.

"I've never had that in an elimination" - he could rightly be proud of himself.

First Ulbrich's back hurts, then he loses concentration

The competition proved to be a tough test for him.

Little was left of the lightness with which he had shone in the Bundesliga.

Ulbrich had to work hard for every shot.

In the first program he was still suffering from his back, in the second he lost his concentration every now and then.

"I didn't manage to focus on myself," he criticized his performance afterwards.

At some point he no longer looked at his opponents, but only at himself and became calmer again.

In the end, he had 627.8 points.

Ulbrich has a comfortable lead in fourth place

After the first day he was six tenths behind Dallinger and three tenths ahead of Koenders.

The decisive factor, however, was the advantage over fourth place, which at that point was already more than eight points for him.

The full distance was not without its pitfalls.

"It's almost like resting on the cushion," he admitted, unintentionally feeling lax.

Ulbrich criticized his performance at the end of qualifying as too defensive

Ulbrich tried to counteract this situation.

The rehearsal before the last program was easy for him with 106.7 points.

But the problems began with the first shot.

Ulbrich started with a 9.9, which was to be followed by five more in the course of the six series.

But because he also delivered numerous clean tens in between, his haul finally added up to 626.5 points.

"You lose your aggressive attacking posture, which you simply need," he rated his performance as too defensive.

But nothing burned anymore.

Robin Zissel, who ended up in fourth place and is going to Tallinn as a substitute, was no longer able to make up the gap of eight points.

"I have to bring that back to the European Championships," said Ulbrich.

The Wilzhofener knows that it will be difficult to confirm his result in Estonia.

The only question is what happens when body and mind don't make life difficult for him again.
