The American skier has achieved her 83rd victory at just 27 years old and remains three behind the men's mark

American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has set a new women's Alpine Ski World Cup record by winning the 83rd event of her career in the first giant slalom at Plan de Corones (Italy) on Tuesday.

Shiffrin holds the solo record at just 27 years old, after equaling Lindsey Vonn's 82 wins in early January, and she falls just three shy of the men's record.

The Colorado skier is now aiming for the mythical 86 victories, an absolute record, of the Swede Ingemar Stenmark.

Wow.

Wow.

Wow.

THIS is how @mikaelashiffrin became the winningest woman alpine skier in history.

Shiffrin can catch up with them before the Courchevel/Meribel World Championships (February 6-19) if she wins all three of the women's World Cup events scheduled up to that point: on Wednesday again at Kronplatz in giant slalom and on Saturday and Sunday in Spindleruv Mlyn (Czech Republic) in slalom.

"I don't know what to say right now...", the world number one told Eurosport after her ninth victory of the season (four in the slalom, four in the giant and one in the super-G).

The skier preferred to have a few words for the track preparers: "These are the best conditions we've had this season in a race," she said.

At Kronplatz's Erta track, where he won in 2019, he gave another demonstration by setting the fastest time in both races.

She beat out Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami and Italian Federica Brignone by one second.

The American continues to increase her lead in the overall World Cup standings (more than 550 points ahead of Gut-Behrami) and is on her way to her fifth World Cup.

Shiffrin had already been aiming for the record for World Cup victories for several years.

The American achieved the first of her 83 victories at the age of 17, in December 2012. Although she hates talking about numbers and statistics, which "dehumanize the sport and what every athlete tries to achieve", she is also expected to get her fifth great balloon after those of 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022. With this record and this start to the season, Shiffrin has forgotten the failure of the Olympic Games in Beijing last year, from which he left without a medal and with three withdrawals.
