After a furious race to catch up, the German national hockey team can still hope for their first world title in 17 years.

The team of national coach André Henning beat England 4:3 in a penalty shoot-out on Wednesday, after regulation time it was 2:2 (0:1).

Germany made it into the semi-finals for the first time since 2010 and will face world number one Australia there on Friday (12 p.m. / TV: Dazn).

Captain Mats Grambusch (57th minute) and his brother Tom, who was three years his junior, saved the selection of the German Hockey Association (DHB) with their goals in the final phase of the penalty shoot-out.

Zachary Wallace (11th) and Liam Ansell had previously scored for the English national team after a penalty corner (32nd) in Bhubaneswar, India.

Finally, in the shootout, Niklas Wellen, Hannes Müller, Thies Prinz and Christopher Rühr were successful for the DHB team, which last won the world championship title in 2006.

Goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg made it through to the semi-finals with a strong save.

Both teams started the game cautiously, Moritz Trompertz provided the first dangerous shot on the German side, but just missed the goal.

A little later, Stuart Rushmere picked up the ball, left several opponents standing in the circle, and Wallace scored from close range.

Stirring fails at seven meters

In the second quarter, Germany initially came into play a little better, but were also unable to use the two penalty corners.

After the break, Ansell raised for England.

Afterwards, the DHB team hardly managed to penetrate the opposing circle.

Christopher Rühr also failed at the seven-meter throw and hit the crossbar.

However, after Trompertz assisted, Grambusch conceded the English team's first goal of the tournament, his brother Tom equalized with a seven-metre throw.

Goalkeeper change pays off

A change from Henning shortly before the end was one of the decisive factors in the German victory: he brought on goalkeeper Dannenberg (Rot-Weiss Köln) for Alexander Stadler.

Danneberg saved a penalty and seriously irritated an English shooter who bounced the ball.

In the other semi-final, Belgium meets the winner of the game Netherlands vs. South Korea.
