More unsuccessful than they have been for a long time: the seventh consecutive game without a win in the league has forced those responsible for the club to act. Ajax Amsterdam has parted ways with coach Alfred Schreuder.

Ajax Amsterdam has separated from its coach Alfred Schreuder and his German assistant Matthias Kaltenbach (37).

The traditional club from the Netherlands announced this "painful but necessary decision" before midnight, right after the 1-1 draw in the evening's home game against FC Volendam, who were threatened with relegation.

The 50-year-old took over TSG Hoffenheim in 2020 as the successor to Julian Nagelsmann, one season later his time in the Bundesliga was over.

It was the seventh game in a row without a win – Ajax last had such a record in the honors division in 1965. The record champions have not won in the league since October 22, the defending champions are fifth in the table and seven points behind arch-rivals Feyenoord Rotterdam.

'Alfred was given time and confidence to change things.

The last few weeks have made it clear that he can no longer turn things around, while we believe he had a squad worthy of the title despite many transfers," said Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar.

Schreuder and Kaltenbach had already worked together at Hoffenheim.

Schreuder was brought in last summer as the successor to Erik ten Hag, who had switched to Manchester United.

His contract ran until June 30, 2024. Former Dutch internationals Michael Reiziger and Richard Witschge will initially look after the team until a successor is found.
