A translator had completely misinterpreted a statement by the American ski star.

Update from January 26, 9:45 p.m

.: Ski ace Mikaela Shiffrin reacted with a lot of humor to a translation error in one of her many interviews.

After her 84th World Cup victory in the giant slalom at Kronplatz in South Tyrol, the 27-year-old American told ORF that it was not an easy race for her because of her period.

"I'm kind of at an unlucky time in my menstrual cycle," she told the public broadcaster in English.

"I don't even go cycling, which I always do every month," the translator translates the English sentence into German.

Obviously a mistake or an oversight.

The translator apparently took the English "cycle" for cycling - the word is translated as "monthly cycle", so it was about the period.

Mikaela Shiffrin: US ski star reacts with humor to interview fail on Instagram

Shiffrin, who leads the overall Ski World Cup by a large margin over the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami, reacted smugly to this detail on Instagram.

Shiffrin posted a video on social media showing her exercising on a bike trainer.

The sequence is underlaid with the song "Bycycle Race" by the cult band "Queen".

"Oh, nice to get my menstrual cycle," Shiffrin writes on the post - and then resolves, "Just in case anyone is confused.

it's my period

We're talking about my period.” The post, which was liked more than 55,000 times in just a few hours, contains laughing smileys.

At the weekend there are two slaloms in Spindlermühle in the Czech Republic before the world championships in Courchevel/Méribel in France.

One of the favorites is called Mikaela Shiffrin.

Without a bike.

Mikaela Shiffrin: ORF translator completely misinterpreted the interview with Ski-Ass

First report from January 26:

Kronplatz - Mikaela Shiffrin has finally risen to the greatest in the history of skiing this season.

In the giant slalom at Kronplatz in South Tyrol, she won her 84th World Cup, overtaking the previous record holder Lindsey Vonn.

Only Ingemar Stenmark (86 wins) is ahead of her.

Alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin talks about her period - ORF translator about cycling

In the ORF interview after the race, there was an embarrassing faux pas.

It was not the American who committed it, but the Austrian TV station.

Shiffrin was asked if she still had enough energy to win the next two slaloms over the weekend, equaling Stenmark's record.

The ski queen then broke a taboo that shouldn't be, but is (still) one: she spoke openly about her cycle.

"I'm at an awkward time in my monthly cycle right now," she said in English.

The ORF reporter translated: "I don't even get to ride my bike, which I usually do every month."

Mikaela Shiffrin misunderstood by Austrian translator

It is obvious how this fatal translation error came about: In English, the word “cycle” has several meanings.

It can mean “cycling” or “cycle” among other things.

The Austrian colleague probably didn't fully understand the rest of the sentence, so he figured it out himself.

With embarrassing consequences.

Effects of the menstrual cycle in women on athletic performance

The performance of women can fluctuate over the course of the period due to hormones.

In the first half of the cycle or follicle phase, for example, muscle strength can be built up more easily and you can recover more quickly.

Around ovulation, i.e. in the middle of the cycle, the elasticity of the ligaments and tendons changes, and the risk of injury increases.

The body's endurance performance is somewhat lower in the second half of the cycle, also known as the luteal phase.

Mikaela Shiffrin talks about the taboo topic of periods in sport

The incorrect translation caused amusement, especially on Twitter.

Many rightly pointed out that periods are still taboo in professional sports.

With her interview, Shiffrin took a step that could encourage imitators to talk about the topic.

In addition to Mikaela Shiffrin and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, there is a second dream couple in the ski circus - a reporter is (rightly) afraid of the possible double name.
