Windsurfer Shahar Tibi took the podium in the opening competition of the World Cup in the Canary Islands • Her teammate Sharon Kantor won bronze

Windsurfer Shahar Tibi won the gold medal today (Saturday) in the opening competition of the World Cup season, which ended in Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands.

Her teammate Sharon Kantor will step on the podium on her 20th birthday to receive the bronze.

Tibi, who finished the preliminaries of the competition in fourth place overall, showed up for the quarter-final cruise together with Maya Morris and Daniela Peleg, knowing that only the two surfers who finish first will qualify for the semi-finals.

It was Morris who started the competition well and led, but her fall very close to the finish line allowed Tibi to finish first followed by Daniela Peleg.

In the semi-finals, Tibi and Peleg met another Israeli, Kati Spichkov, who received the direct ticket to the semi-finals, and Spain's Filler Madrid, who won the competition last year.

This time Spain had the upper hand, with Tibi crossing the finish line right behind her.

Waiting for Tibi and Madrid in the final was Sharon Kantor, the young contestant, who celebrates her 20th birthday today. Kantor won the qualifiers and therefore won the direct ticket to the final.

The last cruise belonged to Spain from the first moment, with the two Israelis fighting each other for the silver medal.

Finally it was Tibi who crossed the finish line second.

Sharon Kantor will celebrate her birthday with the bronze medal as well as with the gold medal in the under-21 category, while the silver medal was taken by another Israeli, Daniela Peleg.

Shahar Tzuberi, coach of the women's team:

"The amount of talent in this team is extraordinary. The women brought great pride to Israel today and proved that our natural place this year is on the podium. We will continue to work and reach the goal competition for the ticket to Paris even more prepared."

The men's team also fielded two competitors for the medal races.

Tom Reuveni received the direct ticket to the semi-finals and waited there for Yoav Cohen, who won the quarter-finals.

The two started the cruise well but were unable to finish in one of the first places and saw the Polish and French competitor advance to the final.

Cohen finished the competition in fourth place overall and Reuveni fifth.
