Union Berlin is in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup after beating VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 (1-1).
The second in the table won a hard-fought game on a day when the round of 16 was almost a minor matter: a few hours before the game kicked off, the change from Isco to Union, which was already considered safe, had collapsed.
It may also have been the unrest about the failed move that paralyzed Berliners a little at first.
In any case, Wolfsburg started more committed and put Union under pressure early on.
After a cross, Wolfsburg's Maximilian Arnold fought for the second ball, passed it to Yannick Gerhardt, who served the free Luca Waldschmidt.
The attacker completed easily from a few meters and gave Wolfsburg an early lead (5th minute).
When it rained heavily at the Alte Försterei, Union Berlin struggled at first - and then managed to equalize out of nowhere.
Access Josip Juranović hit a perfectly timed cross, which Robin Knoche converted with a header to make it 1-1 (12').
After that, the Berliners were the much better team, Wolfsburg's enthusiasm from the beginning of the game had completely disappeared.
Jordan Siebatcheu headed the crossbar (27'), but apart from that Union Berlin didn't create many high-quality chances despite their superiority.
The course of the game didn't change much in the second half either.
Second in the Bundesliga table, they were the better team, but Sheraldo Becker (50') and Rani Khedira (52') didn't create more than half-chances.
Instead, a game developed with many smaller fouls.
Shortly before the end there is another dismissal
Then Union pushed the pace again.
A cross from Khedira flew to Becker, who instead of heading to goal himself dropped it on substitute Kevin Behrens.
He nodded the ball and put Union in the lead (79th).
The strong team from Köpenick didn't give it up either, although the strong Niko Gießelmann had to leave the field after a supposed swallow shortly before the end with yellow-red (86th).
Union Berlin follows VfB Stuttgart into the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup.
The Swabians shot a dramatic game at SC Paderborn in the early evening.
