Second division SC Paderborn was ahead of VfB Stuttgart up to the 86th minute.
Then the first division team turned up the heat late, won the game and, after the 2-1 (0-1) win, is in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup, which will be played on April 4th and 5th.
The game hadn't even really started when VFB Stuttgart was already behind.
Defender Konstantinos Mavropanos got the ball from a throw-in almost on the halfway line.
Without looking, the Greek turned and played the ball powerfully from around 48 meters in the direction of his own goal.
Keeper Florian Müller was standing next to his goal, apparently not expecting the pass and was unable to get the ball (4th minute).
It was the longest own goal in cup history.
Despite being behind, Stuttgart got into the game well, but the often impressive combinations usually ended in front of the Paderborn penalty area.
Paderborn keeper Jannik Huth only had to seriously intervene on Serhou Guirassy's free kick (10').
Other than that, the Stuttgart team couldn't think of much, while the second division limited themselves to counterattacking, but didn't pose a serious threat either.
In the second half, Stuttgart coach Bruno Labbadia introduced Genki Haraguchi, who was recently signed by Union Berlin.
The Swabians then became even more dominant, but did not have any great opportunities.
On the other hand, Paderborn's Felix Platte missed the 2-0 after a counterattack when he shot the ball over the goal from around five meters (71st).
Labbadia's change is bearing fruit
When the Stuttgart offensive became less and less dangerous, Labbadia brought Gil Dias into play (82').
The Portuguese only came from Benfica on Monday – and fitted in well.
With his first shot on goal in the jersey of VfB Stuttgart, he scored the equalizer from around 17 meters (86th).
VfB kept pushing – and got their reward: Guirassy headed in from close range after a corner (90+5).
Paderborn couldn't fight back.
