Mondial 2022: nearly a billion euros invested by bettors in France during the World Cup

The World Cup in Qatar broke new betting records in France. Even if some signs show a slowdown in the rise.

It is a very symbolic milestone that is approaching in the world of sports betting in France.

In a report on the 2022 World Cup published on Thursday, the National Gaming Authority estimates that more than 900 million euros could have been bet in France during the competition, disputed from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar and ended in defeat. of the Blues in the final against Argentina.

That is almost a billion euros invested in this sector during the competition.

This figure should be looked at in more detail.

The only certainty today: that of the record amounts invested online, which amount to 597 million euros.

If the ANJ had advanced the sum of 615 million euros at the end of December, this total takes into account bets modified or canceled by the players, as in the case of combined bets or potential scorer finally not aligned at kick-off.

This is an increase of 56% compared to the 2018 World Cup and 37% compared to Euro 2021, which has fewer matches.

Nearly 10% of that money was wagered on the France national team final alone, with €51m invested in the clash between the France national team and Lionel Messi's Albiceleste.

Another new record, since so far it is the final won by the Blues against Croatia in 2018 which held the palm with 38 million euros.

2.2 million unique players bet online

There remain the figures for physical points of sale, managed by La Française des Jeux.

These final results will be communicated in mid-February, hence the fact that the figure for total stakes is still only an estimate.

For the rest, the ANJ says that the World has produced 70 million gross gaming revenue (GGR), the difference between the money invested by bettors and that returned to them by online operators.

2.2 million unique players have bet on the Internet, and 70% of them have a negative balance.

23% won money, and only 1% won more than ten times their bet.

But while the online betting market has broken records, the report points to “a more global context of slower growth in online sports betting in 2022”.

GGR growth for operators reached 2.5%, compared to 44% for the year 2021 and 7% in 2020, disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The 2022 World Cup bets represent 7.2% of the total bets placed in 2022, compared to 10% in 2018”, underlines the study.

Two explanations for this last data: a lower number of accounts created during the 2022 World Cup than four years earlier.

But also a diversification of bettors, who bet on other football matches or other sports.
