The fact that it gets verbally rough between the team of referees and the teams is somehow part of football.
Sometimes, however, boundaries are crossed that even hardened referees like to know are protected.
Referee Deniz Aytekin justified the red card against Mainz coach Bo Svensson in the cup round of 16 against FC Bayern Munich with an insult to the referee team.
"He asked loudly if we were blind," said Aytekin after Mainz's 0: 4 (click here for the analysis) on Sky on Wednesday evening.
“That's not possible, we can endure a lot, that's all right too.
But we won't let ourselves be insulted, that's the limit for me." The referees are "not the garbage can of the nation, that's not possible".
The very experienced 44-year-old expelled Svensson from the interior in the 81st minute.
The 43-year-old Mainz coach had often verbally clashed with referees and had also been warned.
Aytekin reported a short discussion in the dressing room after the game.
"We high-fived again, it's all good, but at the moment it's too much." The insult that fourth official Martin Petersen reported to him was "not a language I want to hear on the pitch."
Svensson confirmed that he had apologized to Aytekin.
"At some point I said to the fourth referee, are you blind," he said, looking at the red card and adding: "At 0:3, I don't know if that's necessary, but it wasn't necessary on my part either ." He complained that Bayern Bank had been treated differently by the referees.
"It's not quite balanced," said the Dane.

With the victory, the Munich team moved into the quarter-finals.
VfB Stuttgart, Union Berlin and RB Leipzig have already done so.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored for the record champions (17th), Jamal Musiala (30th), Leroy Sane (44th) and Alphonso Davies (83rd).
Bayern professional Thomas Müller achieved another milestone in his career in the encounter.
The 33-year-old played his 63rd game in the DFB-Pokal for FC Bayern, tying the club record with former goalkeeper Sepp Maier.
