She failed, this Monday, when she was the great favorite of the combined, the first event of the Alpine Skiing Worlds in Méribel which will take place until February 19.
Mikaela Shiffrin, the most prolific skier in history with 85 victories (one length behind legend Ingemar Stenmark) failed to win her 7th world championship gold medal.
She has, in fact, abandoned during the slalom event.
The victory went to the Italian Federica Brignone.
The fastest in the morning on the super-G round, Brignone, 32, world number 1 in 2020, beat the Swiss double world champion Wendy Holdner (at 1 sec 62) and the Austrian Ricarda Haaser (at 2 sec 26) at the end of the slalom run.
Left ranks 7th
This is her first success in a World Championship after having won 3 small crystal globes: that of giant and combined in 2020 then that of Super G in 2022. She totals 53 podiums including 21 World Cup victories.
Best Frenchwoman in the first round with Tessa Worley (tie 11th at 1′'39 from Brignone), Laura Gauché finished eighth in the slalom (+ 2′'36).
The native of Moûtiers, 27, therefore ranks seventh in this combined World Championships at home.
The other tricolor engaged in this slalom, Romane Miradoli, did not finish the course.
