Boris Herrmann's team Malizia took the lead on stage two of the circumnavigation.
The crew around skipper Will Harris made the comeback after being more than 200 nautical miles behind and having problems with the foils.
On the twelfth day, Team Malizia took command of the course from Cape Verde to Cape Town.
"That is so cool!
It's magical considering we were more than 200 nautical miles behind,” said Dutch Malizia sailor Rosalin Kuiper.
The Swiss team Holcim – PRB with Susann Beucke from Strande and the US team 11th Hour Racing were in second and third place on Monday evening.
The Franco-German Guyot Environnement – Team Europe was slowed down in a calm field after an unsuccessful attempt to take a shortcut.
A burst spinnaker puts additional strain on the team around Berlin skipper Robert Stanjek, who are struggling to catch up 245 nautical miles behind Team Malizia.
Herrmann is still recovering
Boris Herrmann, who is being replaced on this stage by the Brit Harris and is curing his scalded foot on stage one, awaits his team in Cape Town.
The forecast of the 41-year-old from Hamburg for the final week of the stage from Cape Verde to Cape Town: »Now it's time for cold fronts and low-pressure areas in the Southern Ocean.
It gets cold!
We will sail towards the ice limit.«
The boats are expected to arrive at Cape Town's destination on February 11th or 12th.
Herrmann said: 'The provisions have to be rationed.
Temperatures may go down to 15 or even 10 degrees.«
