Israel's taekwondo team, which held an international competition in Istanbul, Turkey this weekend, are still in a country that experienced a major disaster tonight (between Sunday and Monday), with a strong earthquake and several aftershocks.
The team did not return to Israel, because they stayed for another competition in Turkey of the world tour that should start tomorrow and currently there is no change issued by the organizing committee, and it should take place as usual.
World runner-up Dana Azran told Israel Hayom: "We slept at night and didn't feel anything, we got up in the morning and received messages from family and friends, that's the only way I was updated. Azran, who won bronze in the same competition, added: "Overall, I am satisfied with my performance in the competition on Saturday, but I feel that I am capable of more and able to beat the British woman that I lost to. You just have to keep pushing forward and it will come."
Union chairman Yehuda Maayan said: "If it was dangerous, the organizers would have canceled the upcoming competition on their own and would not have taken responsibility.
We are in contact with the delegation and everyone is fine."
The Israeli Taekwondo Association stated: "We are being informed that everything is fine with the Israeli Taekwondo delegation in Istanbul and it was not caught in the earthquake. We are supporting the Turkish people in these difficult times."
