A number of sports events, which were supposed to take place in the coming week in Turkey, were canceled following the strong earthquake that struck the country in the last day.
The Turkish Athletics Association announced this evening (Monday) that the Balkan Indoor Championships, which was supposed to open on Saturday, have been cancelled.
The Israeli Athletics Association said: "The Athletics Association sends its deepest condolences to the Turkish people and the members of the Turkish Athletics Association."
The Balkan Championships were also supposed to be a preparation for the European Indoor Athletics Championships, in less than a month in Istanbul.
In the meantime, the second taekwondo competition in Turkey last week was also canceled, when it was decided to hold tomorrow only the Paralympic qualifiers of the world round, and all the other Olympic qualifiers, which were supposed to be points for Paris 2024, were canceled.
At the taekwondo association, they are trying to locate a return flight for the team for tomorrow, when the airport in Istanbul suffers from a heavy load of quite a few residents trying to leave the country and flights that are also delayed due to the weather.
In addition, there is another series of sports events in Turkey in the coming month, including the European Indoor Archery Championships as early as next week, when it is not yet known what will happen to them.
