Borussia Dortmund's run continues in the DFB Cup: With the 2-1 (1-0) win at VfL Bochum in a hard-fought small district derby, BVB wins its round of 16 and completes the round of the last eight.

Emre Can put Dortmund, who have won every game so far in the 2023 calendar year, in the lead from a long distance (45' + 1 minute), Kevin Stöger's penalty goal gave Bochum hope for a few more minutes (64') - until Marco Reus scored the second BVB goal Goal succeeded (70th).

The form curves of both teams promised a high-class exchange of blows: VfL Bochum recently won five times in a row at their own stadium and climbed out of the relegation zone in the Bundesliga table, Dortmund have won every game in 2023 so far.

BVB coach Edin Terzić, however, rebuilt his first team in several positions: Mats Hummels replaced Nico Schlotterbeck in the starting eleven, whose brother Keven was also only on the bench at VfL.

The suspended Karim Adeyemi was replaced by Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, while Julian Ryerson and Salih Özcan started for Raphaël Guerreiro and Reus.

Dortmund started the game decisively and had more of the ball, Bochum went into the tackles with confidence and held back.

The guests had the first chance, a cross from Marius Wolf slipped through to Bynoe-Gittens.

His attempt was blocked by Manuel Riemann with a foot defense (13').

Riemann deflected a free kick from Julian Brandt over the crossbar with his hand (24'), otherwise the game had a lot of speed and intense duels to offer, but not too many scenes in the penalty area.

Shortly before the break, Bynoe-Gittens then put a good opportunity over the goal (45th) - before Can curiously scored the lead: In order to intercept a BVB pass, Riemann left his penalty area and cleared the ball to the center circle.

But Can had been careful there, switched the fastest and shot the ball past Riemann, who was rushing back, from a long distance into the goal (45+1).

Penalty brings Bochum back briefly

Bochum now had to do more for the offensive - and they did: Winger Christopher Antwi-Adjei and BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel met twice, the first time the Swiss made a save (54th), the second time he caught Antwi-Adjei Ball off the foot in the last second (58').

Bochum then had the chance to equalize with a penalty kick: Bynoe-Gittens had blocked a shot with his arm on the line to the penalty area.

A tight but correct penalty decision by referee Tobias Stieler, who watched the scene again in the video to be on the safe side.

Stöger converted safely (64th).

In the final phase, however, Bochum's enthusiasm was no longer enough to keep BVB in check.

Özcan found Jude Bellingham with a deep pass, who put it across in the penalty area and the freshly substituted Reus only had to push in (70th).
