Former national soccer player Friedel Lutz is dead. As his former club Eintracht Frankfurt announced, the long-time defender of Hessen died on Tuesday at the age of 84.

Lutz was part of the Frankfurt team that won the German championship title in 1959.

He also played the memorable European Cup final against Real Madrid in 1960 (3:7).

In total, Lutz remained loyal to Eintracht for 15 years, in between he switched to 1860 Munich for a season, but was not happy there and returned to Eintracht, where he ended his Bundesliga career in 1973.

Overall, he completed more than 400 games for Eintracht.

After that he worked for the club for years as a kit manager.

He was the second player after Lothar Kobluhn to be sent off in the Bundesliga with a red card.

In the game against Eintracht Braunschweig in 1971, he kicked his opponent, who had previously fouled him.

With the national team, Lutz finished second in the World Cup in England in 1966, and the World Cup semi-final against the Soviet Union, in which he replaced the injured Horst-Dieter Höttges in defence, was the last of his twelve international matches.
