Protests surrounding Russia's participation in the upcoming Olympics are gaining momentum, when Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced yesterday (Tuesday) that she does not want a Russian delegation at the 2024 Olympics, while the war in Ukraine continues.
In an interview with France Info, Hidalgo said: "As long as Russia continues to wage war with Ukraine, I do not want there to be a Russian delegation at the Paris 2024 Games. It is impossible to continue as if nothing happened, and for a delegation to arrive in Paris while the bombs continue to fall on Ukraine."
Hidalgo also claimed that the neutral flag "doesn't really exist," but said it was important to make a distinction with "Russian athletes who oppose the war, who want to march under the refugee flag and who do not "support Russian President Vladimir Putin and his aggression," as reported by L'Equipe.
The Minister of Youth and Sports in Ukraine, Vadim Gotsait, warned that the nation is considering a boycott of Paris 2024 if Russia and Belarus are present at the upcoming Olympics, although the World Olympic Committee said in response that any boycott would be a violation of the Olympic Charter.
