Marta Bassino has never won a Super-G in the World Cup. At the World Ski Championships in Méribel, the Italian was on the top of the podium for the first time in this discipline.

At the Alpine Ski World Championships in Méribel, the Italian Federica Brignone was the top favorite in the Super-G competition.

At the end of the race there was an Italian victory - not for Brignone, but for Marta Bassino.

The 26-year-old won her second world title after 2021 in the parallel competition.

In the World Cup she had already made it onto the podium four times in the Super-G, but she had never managed to win.

At the finish, Bassino had to tremble for a long time.

Especially in the first part of the race, numerous female riders were clearly ahead of her.

But neither Brignone, nor the Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel nor Lara Gut-Behrami from Switzerland could save their lead over Bassino, who was outstanding in the lower part, to the finish.

German starters without a chance

Mikalea Shiffrin from the USA took silver (+0.11 seconds), bronze went to Norway's Kajsa Lie and Cornelia Hütter from Austria (each +0.33 seconds).

The top six were separated by just 0.37 seconds.

The German starters Emma Aicher (+1.15 seconds) and Kira Weidle (+1.81 seconds) had nothing to do with the decision.

So far, Brignone has won the 2023 World Ski Championships and local hero Alexis Pinturault has succeeded in the combination.

The men's Super-G is on the program on Thursday (11.30 a.m. / TV: ZDF).
