Thanks to a 5-3 win (0-1, 1-1, 1-1) on penalties against Fortuna Düsseldorf, 1. FC Nürnberg has reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup.

Dawid Kownacki scored the opening goal (33rd minute) for Düsseldorf, which Taylan Duman countered late (90+3).

After neither team was able to bring about the decision in extra time, Düsseldorf's Jona Niemiec missed the decisive penalty on penalties.

This makes Nuremberg the last Bundesliga 2 club still represented in the competition.

Previously, SC Paderborn and SV Sandhausen had failed in the round of 16.

In the duel of table sixth in the second division Düsseldorf against table 16.

At first, the Franks had a surprising advantage in Nuremberg.

Düsseldorf struggled going forward in the game, Lino Tempelmann brought about the first dangerous conclusion of the game for Nuremberg, which Florian Kastenmeier was able to steer to the crossbar with difficulty (26th).

However, the guests from Düsseldorf could rely on their own chances in the first half: Emmanuel Iyoha crossed from the left wing, in the middle Kownacki won the header duel and used Fortuna's first compelling opportunity to take the lead (33').

Nuremberg equalized shortly before the end

Daniel Thioune's team was initially able to maintain this, but not expand on it: After the break, Kownacki got more opportunities, but didn't hit the ball properly at first (60') and then let goalkeeper Peter Vindahl Jensen decisively disrupt him (69').

Things got hectic in the final phase: first Düsseldorf's assistant coach Manfred Stefes saw yellow-red (90+2) apparently because of complaining, then Nürnberg equalized: Mats Møller Dæhli's cross put Duman on goal and because the ball came from Christoph Klarer was decisively deflected, there was nothing for Kastenmeier to stop (90+3).

Afterwards, Nuremberg literally trembled through the extra time: First, Florian Flick cleared a lob from Jorrit Hendrix just before the line (92'), later Hendrix failed again at the crossbar (104').

With an emergency brake against Niemiec, Flick prevented another possible goal being conceded, so it went to penalties.

There, Duman missed first.

But because Düsseldorf's Kastenmeier had moved off the line too early, the penalty was repeated.

Duman scored, Nuremberg's record from the point remained flawless - Vindahl Jensen's save against Niemiec then prepared the happy ending for FCN before Erik Shuranov made the comeback victory perfect with his penalty.
