Overall World Cup leader Johannes Bø won the gold medal in the sprint at the Biathlon World Championships in Oberhof.

In difficult conditions and thick fog, the 29-year-old confidently secured the title in 23:21.7 minutes, despite one penalty in prone.

For the Norwegian it was the twelfth gold at world championships and his 22nd world championship medal in his career.

In the current World Cup season, Bø had won all sprint races.

Second, 14.8 seconds back, was his older brother Tarjei Bø (0 penalties), with Sturla Holm Laegreid (1) another Norwegian taking bronze.

Fourth place for Johannes Dale (1/+43.6) and sixth place for Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen (1/+59.7) underlined the dominance of the team.

One day after Denise Herrmann-Wick's World Championship victory, the German biathlon men could not intervene in the decision for the medals.

Johannes Kühn was the best German in eighth place with one penalty loop. In the end he was 1:04.8 minutes behind the day's winner.

Justus Strelow shot clean and finished twelfth in the first World Championship race of his career.

Ex-world champion Benedikt Doll (+2:47.5 minutes), after the disappointment in the mixed relay at the start of the World Cup, experienced another weak day and a debacle with five penalty loops, including Roman Rees (2 errors / + 1:50.4) disappointed.

The two pursuit races are planned for Sunday (1:25 p.m. and 3:30 p.m./ZDF and Eurosport).
