An impressive achievement for the track cyclist Michael Yaakovlev, who this evening (Friday) advanced to the semi-finals of the European Championship being held in Grenchen, Switzerland.
Yaakovlev, who immigrated to Israel last year, set a time of 9.52 seconds for 200 meters in the qualifiers and finished in second place.
This result gave him automatic qualification to the round of 16 and placement against riders who were slower in the qualifiers.
In the next stage, he had no difficulty beating the Italian Matthias Pridemo and secured his place in the quarter-finals, where he met the German Maximilian Dornbach, last year's silver medalist, when he also beat him and at the end of the two rounds, he saw the green mark that declared him the winner.
Tomorrow Yaakovlev will go up to compete in the semi-finals, when at the end of the evening, he will try to bring Israel a historic medal in the sport.
22-year-old Yaakovlev immigrated to Israel from Marubia and is considered a great talent.
He competes in the sprint competitions on track bikes (velodrome) and won a bronze medal in the keirin competition at the World Championships and the individual sprint competition at the European Championships in 2021 (both disciplines are Olympic).
