The Winner Jerusalem International Marathon was launched today (Monday) in a festive event in the presence of Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon and in the presence of the Minister of Culture and Sports, Miki Zohar.
During the event, Leon gave a special token of appreciation to the athlete Blessing Afripa, the world youth champion under the age of 20 in the 200 meter run, the fourth boy in history to run under 20 seconds in this event, thus entering a distinguished list alongside runners such as Usain Bolt, Arion Knighton and Tesil Tabogo.
Last Saturday, Afrifa set a new Israeli record for the 200m indoor race of 20.95 in a competition held in Metz, France.
European youth record holder and three-time champion of Israel, will run this year in the Jerusalem marathon as part of the community race and will accompany the runners from associations and social organizations.
The marathon will be the opening shot for a number of significant sports events that will take place in Jerusalem this year, among others: the final of the State Cup in basketball, the European Championships in athletics under the age of 20, and more.
"Blessing Afripa is a figure who is a role model for the sportsmen and sportswomen of the future in Israel," said at the event the mayor of Jerusalem, Moshe Leon, "His impressive achievements at such a young age were enough to make history and leave a mark, and we wish him success and conquer more and more peaks."
Afrifa himself said: "I am very excited to receive a certificate of recognition in such a prestigious position of the Winner Jerusalem Marathon, which in my eyes is a symbol of a competition in which everyone can take part. I wish all the participants great success and thank you for the opportunity to take part in the marathon as an ambassador from the end of the communities in which take part groups that do Sacred work for the sake of Israeli society."
The Winner Jerusalem International Marathon will take place on March 17 and approximately 40,000 participants are expected to take part in it, running a unique route that includes important and historical landmarks in the city of Jerusalem alongside spectacular and breathtaking views, including: the Supreme Court, the Israel Museum, the residence of the Presidents of Israel, the walls of the Old City and the Armenian Quarter, the Tower of David, the Khan Theater and the Sultan's Pool.
