The duels at European level between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain began in 1994. And they started with George Weah.

The Liberian in the service of the French scored the first goal in Oliver Kahn's long Champions League history in the 2-0 win in Paris, and in Munich he scored a fantastic goal in front of 46,000 spectators in the Olympic Stadium to win 1-0.

As the season progressed, both were only eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals, and Weah was voted World Player of the Year in 1995.

In the 1997/1998 season they met again in the group stage of the Champions League and the highest victory in these duels also dates from this season: Bayern won their home game 5-1.

Mario Basler (left) and Giovane Elber had five reasons to celebrate, Elber scored twice, as did Carsten Jancker.

The PSG of that time had little to do with the one of today.

Apart from goalscorer Marco Simone and aging Brazil ten Raí, it was a team of the nameless.

In the domestic Ligue 1, the team finished eighth that season.

Almost three years later they saw each other again in the group stage of the Champions League.

PSG won their home game 1-0 before Kahn kept a clean sheet against the French for the first time in Munich: FCB won 2-0 and a certain Hasan Salihamidžić put Bayern ahead early on.

While at PSG there was a lot of average on the pitch alongside the young Nicolas Anelka, Bayern reached the final – and won their first premier class title in 25 years against Valencia.

Fast forward to 2017. In those 17 years between the Munich title season and the rematch, PSG had become a big player on the European football stage thanks to the arrival of the Qatari.

With superstar Neymar, who came from Barcelona for 222 million euros before the start of the season, the French overran Bayern 3-0.

It was Carlo Ancelotti's last game as Bayern coach.

The new sports director Salihamidžić (l.) had to deal with his first major crisis with Munich.

As the tournament progressed, the stop sign for both clubs was Real Madrid – for PSG in the round of 16, Bayern in the semifinals.

Then finally in 2020 the first meeting outside of the group stage and then straight away in the final.

There, Neymar and colleagues finally wanted to celebrate their club's first European title since winning the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1996, but one of their ex-players of all people thwarted their plans: Kingsley Coman headed the Munich team to a 1-0 win.

Even in the 13th attempt in the premier class, PSG remained without the title, while Munich, on the other hand, after three victories in the European Cup, now also won the third after 2001 and 2013 in the Champions League.

They met again the following season, this time in the quarter-finals.

Already in the first leg, PSG set the course for progress: Kylian Mbappé scored twice in the 3-2 first leg win in Munich.

Bayern, who had to do without top attacker Robert Lewandowski, won the second leg in Paris 1-0, but were eliminated after numerous missed chances in the first and second leg.

However, it was not his fault: Lewandowski representative Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored in the first and second leg.

A lap later, however, it was the end of the line for PSG again: This time they narrowly failed at Manchester City.
