Several countries announced today (Tuesday) that they will boycott the world championships for men and women in boxing, after Russian and Belarusian athletes were approved to compete under the national flag and anthem of the countries, while the war in Ukraine continues.
The one who leads the fight is the United States, which was the first to withdraw.
The national governing body - USA Boxing cited the "continuing failures of the World Boxing Association and respect for the Olympic Charter" as reasons for withdrawing from the World Championships.
New Delhi, India is scheduled to host the women's event from March 15 to 31, while the men's tournament is scheduled to take place in Uzbekistan's capital, Tashkent, from May 1 to 14.
The British Boxing Association also decided not to send representatives, and stated that the decision to boycott the women's boxing world championship was made because of "ongoing concerns about the future of the sport's place in the Olympic program and the latest move by the world association."
The two countries were also joined by the Czech Republic and Ireland, who will not compete in the most important competition of the industry, when several other countries are considering their steps, when there are attempts to establish a new body, since the world association today is controlled by Russians, when relations deteriorated with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Boxing was therefore left out of the initial program for Los Angeles 2028 and could still be excluded from Paris 2024.
